Whitney International signs agreement to provide distributed learning to the University of Norbert Wiener

Whitney International University System has signed a Joint Venture agreement with the Universidad Norbert Wiener (UNW) located in Lima, Peru. The scope of the Joint Venture is to offer distributed education throughout Peru using Whitney’s technology, know-how and academic content and leveraging UNW’s accreditation and brand.

UNW was founded by Dr. Alcibiades Horna Figueroa in 1996, and the university along with its two institutes, Instituto Carrillon and Instituto Wiener, account for over 16,000 presential students in Peru. UNW is the first university in Latin America to achieve ISO 9001:2000 certification.

UNW is known primarily as a health sciences and medical university, but it also offers degrees in business and law. UNW is highly respected in the Peruvian market and has grown dramatically in the past few years.

“We are very pleased to announce our alliance with Universidad Norbert Wiener in Peru. This is a great opportunity for Whitney to partner with a strong university in a quickly growing market,” says Doug Frederick, CEO of Whitney. “We view Peru as a key country for our Distributed Education offering, and this partnership extends our coverage in Latin America. With alliances in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Panama already in place, Peru was a natural next step for our company.”

Peru is the fifth largest country in Latin America, with over 27 million inhabitants. Its GDP has been growing rapidly, thanks in large part to a diversified economy with abundant natural resources.

This partnership agreement was lead by Chris Dammert, Vice President of Whitney, who has been based in Lima and will be the General Manager of the newly formed Joint Venture with UNW.

“There is a tremendous need for this type of education in Peru,” says Mr. Dammert, “and we are excited about partnering with UNW to bring Distributed Education to this country.”

The newly formed Joint Venture company will be based in Lima and plans to open learning centers throughout the country.
